homemade butter

My sister sent a little care package our way:   some sun print paper, some Little House picture books, and this delightful jar in which you can shake yourself some butter out of heavy cream.  I suppose one could use any old jar, but this one has a nice filter to help rinsing the excess and let the finished butter drop into a ramekin.

Maya thought my dancing to the shaking was a bit silly, so we turned the jar over to Finn, who did his thing too.  I baked some bread and we had homemade bread and handshaken butter with our dinner.  It's amazing how much these small things, things made by hand--and the bread, made with Maya, as she poured each ingredient in but wasn't interested in getting her hands doughy--things made for people I love.

Molly! Until now I didn't realize you were writing in this new space. Hello!

And mmmmmmm butter! Ali was just reading up on cultured butter and saying, "Don't you think you'd like to run a dairy for the farm??" (Which is, in fact, fairly unlike him.)
